A Los Angeles charity director is accused of taking at least $10m from an escrow of money meant for the homeless.
Alexander Soofer, 42 years old and CEO of Abundant Blessings in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), received over $23 million between 2018-2025 from homeless housing funds.
He allegedly spent a large chunk of that money on a $7-million house in Westwood and a Range Rover worth $125,000, tuition at private schools for his kids, travel by private jet, and luxury resort stays.
If convicted, federal charges can include wire fraud. The maximum sentence is 20 years. State charges include 11 counts for conflict of interests, 2 counts for offering false evidence, and 5 counts for forged documents.
Bill Essayli, first assistant United States attorney says that the arrest shows a renewed emphasis on fraud in California.
California is the poster state for fraud, abuse, and waste of taxpayer dollars. State has spent billions on homelessness with very little results and no oversight.
This money should have gone to those in need, instead it lined the pockets of individuals subsidizing their lavish lifestyle.” The money that should have been going to the poor was instead used by individuals who were subsidizing their extravagant lifestyle .”
