Intel 14A Beats Defect Targets as $2.1B Foundry Loss Keeps Pressure on INTC

Intel says its next-generation 14A manufacturing process is reducing defects faster than planned, offering one of the strongest technical signals yet for a foundry turnaround that remains deeply unprofitable.

CFO David Zinsner said at Deutsche Bank’s Technology Conference that 14A defect density is tracking better than Intel’s internal target curve. He described the rate of improvement as the best the company has seen since its highly successful 22-nanometer process, according to detailed reporting on the remarks.

The market is not rewarding the technical progress without reservation. Intel shares finished Friday at $89.47, down 2.85%, while its Foundry division is still burning billions of dollars as Intel tries to establish itself as a credible alternative to TSMC in advanced contract manufacturing.

14A Improves, but Yield Is the Real Test

Defect density matters because fewer manufacturing defects generally increase the probability that more usable chips can be produced from each wafer. But it is not the same thing as final production yield.

Chip size, design complexity and the distribution of defects also affect how many commercially viable processors emerge from a wafer. Intel therefore has not demonstrated that 14A is already ready for profitable mass manufacturing.

Intel plans to begin 14A risk production in the second half of 2027 and target high-volume manufacturing in 2028. The node combines second-generation RibbonFET transistors, PowerDirect backside power delivery and High-NA EUV lithography. Intel is targeting 15%–20% more performance at equal power, or 25%–35% lower power at equal performance, compared with 18A, alongside up to 30% higher density. Those remain company targets rather than independent measurements of production chips.

The development adds another layer to Intel’s Q2 turnaround, when stronger AI demand and improving factory execution helped revenue climb 25% year over year to $16.1 billion.

The $2.1 Billion Problem Has Not Disappeared

Intel Foundry generated $5.765 billion of Q2 revenue, up 31% from $4.417 billion a year earlier. Yet the division still posted a $2.089 billion operating loss. That was substantially better than the $3.168 billion loss in Q2 2025, but it still represented roughly 36% of segment revenue.

Revenue $5.77B $4.42B
Operating loss $2.09B $3.17B
Loss margin 36% 72%

There is another important qualification: only $293 million of Q2 Foundry revenue came from external customers, while $5.5 billion was intersegment revenue largely tied to Intel’s own products.

That makes external demand the next major proof point.

Zinsner said discussions with prospective 14A customers have progressed from simply reviewing technical data toward asking how much manufacturing capacity Intel can provide. Still, Intel has not announced a major binding external 14A production contract tied to those comments.

The distinction matters after speculation and announcements involving potential customers have repeatedly moved Intel shares. Intel itself warns that the pace of 14A factory expansion will depend on committed demand from both its internal roadmap and significant outside customers.

Intel Needs Customers, Not Just Better Wafers

The improving defect curve suggests Intel may be repairing one of the weaknesses that damaged its manufacturing leadership over the previous decade. The economics remain a separate challenge.

Intel’s data-center and AI business is benefiting from the wider AI chip boom, but becoming a globally competitive foundry requires outside companies to entrust valuable chip designs to Intel factories at scale.

For INTC investors, that is now the more consequential milestone. 14A can be technically impressive without becoming financially transformative. The strongest confirmation of Intel’s foundry turnaround would be a combination of improving yields, large external customer commitments and continued narrowing of a business that still lost more than $2 billion last quarter.
