The FBI warns financial institutions, as well as the general public, about an increase in ATM attacks which force them to disburse cash.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center has issued a “flash alert” stating that there have been over 1,900 incidents of so-called “jackpotting”.
In 2025, there were over 700 attacks resulting in more than $20,000,000 in damages.
Criminals open ATMs using generic keys widely available to crack them.
Then they remove or replace hard drives and install malware which exploits Windows systems, and XFS layer software that controls the cash dispensers.
This malware allows attackers to send money directly without requiring authorization from the bank.
Department of Justice already filed charges against several dozen people who were involved in Ploutus Jackpotting Attacks.
Federal authorities in total have arrested 93 suspects. Many of them are alleged to be members of Venezuelan criminal gang Tren de Aragua.
The FBI urges lenders to install standard locks and vibration sensors, activate hard drive encryption, list hardware and software, and enable detailed USB device logging.
