EU Increases Pressure on Russia with 19th Sanctions package
The European Union unveiled their 19th package of sanctions aimed at crippling Russian funding for war and limiting Moscow’s ability to access vital energy, financial, and military technology.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stressed that Russia’s energy is its lifeline.
The revenues of fossil fuels are the mainstays of Russia’s economy.
The Energy Crackdown: Key Measures
New measures have a broader scope and are more aggressive than the previous round.
- Starting January 1, 2027 Beginning Banning Russian LNG
- New restrictions for Russian financial institutions and banks including those that operate through third countries
- Blacklisted: More than 100 ships of the Russian “shadow fleet
- Control of crypto platforms to prevent sanctions
Von der Leyen stressed the extent of the crackdown by pointing out Russia’s Energy Sector and sanctions evasion.
We are going to punish those who purchase oil against sanctions and fuel the war in Russia.
The EU has also imposed additional restrictions on those responsible for abducting and deporting Ukrainian children to “re-education” camps, underlining its determination to punish human rights abusers.
The Human Rights Act, finance, and elusive loopholes are under fire
EU has also tightened restrictions on the access of sensitive technologies, ranging from geospatial information and artificial intelligence to materials used for weapons production. The EU is taking these steps to eliminate loopholes that Moscow exploited through intermediaries such as China or India.
The following are the highlights of this package:
- Export restrictions on High-Tech Products With Potential Military Applications
- Restriction on Special Economic Zones in Russia
-
Sanctions for Companies that Help Circumvent the Law
Von der Leyen emphasized the effectiveness of this measure so far and insisted that it is already having an impact on Russia’s military machine.
Our economic analysis shows that our sanctions have a severe impact on the Russian economy. “Sanctions relief is one of the Russians’ first requests.”
The EU’s Goals Before the Peace Talks
Leaders in Europe note that the ultimate objective is to deny Moscow resources to continue its aggressive behavior while supporting Ukraine militarily. As von der Leyen concluded:
We will continue to increase pressure on Russia by imposing ever stronger sanctions and providing military support for Ukraine until Russia accepts a fair, lasting, just peace.
