DoJ: Bank Teller steals $150,450 from cash drawer, drains elderly customers’ accounts to conceal theft

After stealing money from her employer, and withdrawing money from customers’ accounts without authorization, a 28-year old North Carolina bank teller will serve months of prison time as well as paying tens thousands in restitution.

The U.S. Department of Justice claims that Sarah Wilson stole $150,450 from the teller’s drawer at First Citizens Bank.

According to court documents, Wilson tried to hide her crimes through manipulating bank financial records.

Wilson assured the 89 year old that “everything looked fine” when he asked her about suspicious activities on his account.

Wilson also stole $42,650 out of the certificate-of-deposit account.

Wilson, a former employee of First Citizens Bank was terminated in May 2024 after an investigation revealed her extent of theft.

Wilson began working at First Citizens Bank as a teller in December 2023. In August 2025, Wilson pleaded guilty on three counts of embezzlement committed by an employee of the bank. Wilson must also pay $150,450 as restitution in addition to serving a prison term of 21 months and 36 month’s of supervision.
