BNP Paribas analysts say that the US stock market could experience a perfect storm, which will send it higher.
Bloomberg reported that an indicator used by the bank to determine equity positions of different investor groups, such as commodity trading advisors, volatility target funds, and hedge funds, has increased just a little bit above “neutral”.
Bank of America says the last time that institutions had been this underweight in stocks was 2023. That year, US equity indexes saw a substantial rally.
BNP analysts call it “unloved” rally.
Greg Boutle is BNP Paribas’ head of US Equity and Derivative Strategy.
The addition of risk is a good thing. If investors are dragged into a rally that they don’t like, it could lead to inflated market prices.
Bank strategists expect up to $20 billion of buying power from institutions over the course of the coming week, as these institutions are forced to jump in to the rally which began in April amid tariff-induced uncertainties.
Boutle Says
BNP’s not the only prominent player who is bullish about the stock market.
Tom Lee, Fundstrat, said in a Q&A on the Global Money Talk channel that Fundstrat had predicted at the beginning of the year that the US broader stock market would be outperformed by industrials, finance and technology.
Lee notes that the industrial and financial sectors have dominated other industries, but now tech is also gaining traction. Fundstrat believes that the equity markets will be dominated by these three sectors for the remainder of this year, according to Lee.
Fundstrat’s executive believes that the Federal Reserve is likely to begin cutting rates next year. He also expects a particular equity group to see heightened demand.
The Fed is cutting interest rates in the coming year. I believe that this will be good news for stocks with interest. This should be good for financials, and small- and midcaps .”
