Rising USD reserves signal liquidity focus despite large unrealized crypto losses.
Strategy began 2026 by increasing its bitcoin holdings and cash reserves, while expanding both sides of the balance sheet. According to a filing made on January 5 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company added 1,287 BTC and increased its U.S. Dollar reserve to $2.25 million.
The total bitcoin holdings amounted to 673,783 BTC. This is one of the largest corporate treasures in the world. The purchases were made between December 29 and 4 January and cost approximately $116 million.
The acquisitions were funded entirely by the sale of Class A common stocks at market value. The company increased its USD reserves by $62 millions during the same time period, in addition to increasing its crypto exposure.

The small purchase made in December was followed by the January purchase. The January tranche was paid for at an average price of $90,391 each. The average price paid by Strategy for all its bitcoins increased modestly, to approximately $75,026.
In addition, the aggregate spending on bitcoins since Strategy adopted its Treasury strategy has risen to $50.6 billion including fees. At current market values, the holdings have significant unrealized gains.
The management has continued to view bitcoin as a long term reserve asset, rather than a short term trade. The company made the purchases in early January, confirming its habit of acting quickly when reporting periods begin.

Strategy also relied on equity issues to finance its most recent moves. Between December 29th and January 4th, the firm sold almost two million MSTR share for more than $312m.
After these sales, more than $11 billion in Class-A shares remains available under the ATM Program. No preferred shares were purchased during this window. This leaves more than $41 Billion in capacity for all programs.
The company also highlighted recent financial strains. Strategy reported significant unrealized digital assets losses for 2025 along with related deferred taxes benefits.
Despite these numbers, the management stressed liquidity. The USD reserve is intended to cover preferred dividends, interest obligations and provide flexibility during volatile market conditions.
Market watchers are wondering if Strategy will be able to surpass its current buying pace in 2025. Early January activity suggests that the possibility is still open.
