Arthur Hayes (co-founder of BitMEX) posted on X that CryptoPunks would outperform Ethereum in US dollar terms this cycle. He argued it was less about blockchain fundamentals than about status signaling in a digital age.
He described it as a “status game” similar to the way wealthy individuals show off their wealth by buying luxury cars and art. Hayes believes that investors will likely move their ETH gains to rare, high-end non-fungible tokens like CryptoPunks.
CryptoPunks is one of the first and most iconic NFT collection, with a limited supply of 10,000. Their deep-rooted cultural importance in Web3 makes them a rarity and prestige.
The latest surge in trading volume supports this theory
Hayes’ theory and prediction could be valid, considering the recent resurgence of on-chain NFT volumes. CryptoPunks, for example, saw a surge in activity over the weekend with more than $26 million worth of trades.
The sales surge was 460% in a week. Approximately half of the volume came from their native marketplace. The collection’s entry level price is now around 48 ETH ($177k).
Hayes believes Ethereum holders may, after accumulating large gains, redirect their capital to flex-assets like CryptoPunks to enable them to outperform ETH during this cycle.
Recent whale activity, with over $100 billion of large ETH transactions, suggests institutional movement and possible ETH selling pressure. Some of this capital may be shifting to NFTs.
Node’s IP Acquisition
In May, the Infinite Node Foundation, a newly-formed nonprofit backed up by VC Ribbit Capital purchased the CryptoPunks Intellectual Property from Yuga Labs. The purchase price was around $20 million.
NODE plans museum preservation, community engagement and expansion efforts. For example, it will host a full collection in Palo Alto, and run an Ethereum node to ensure permanence.
The main goal is to elevate CryptoPunks as digital collectibles and into cultural artifacts. This includes integrating them in academia, galleries, historical discourse, etc.
It’s important to note that Yuga Labs reportedly still holds 414 CryptoPunks which are now valued at approximately $71 million.
Hayes’s claim, that CryptoPunks would outperform Ethereum is not just hype. Since Ethereum is the backbone of the ecosystem, elite NFTs may become highly sought after trophy assets.
