A Connecticut bank has lost more than $33,000 after police say forged paperwork, stolen identities and impersonation powered a string of fraudulent withdrawals.

Bryan David Sheriff, 25, of West Morningside St. in Hartford, is facing multiple felony counts in the case, reports WFSB.

Thomaston Savings Bank’s fraud department alerted Thomaston police to the suspected fraud on June 18th, 2026.

Detectives then worked the case with the bank, Watertown police, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the U.S. Treasury Department.

Police say the probe uncovers an elaborate scam built around forgeries, identity theft and impersonation. According to authorities, detectives “unraveled an elaborate scam involving various forgeries, identity thefts and impersonations resulting in fraudulent bank withdrawals totaling more than $33,000.”

Sheriff faces charges of first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, trafficking personal identifying information, first-degree identity theft, first-degree forgery and false statement to procure issuance of a payment card.

Sheriff, who has prior convictions for gun and drug offenses as well as conspiracy to commit robbery, was being held Friday at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution on a $250,000 bond.

Police say an arrest warrant remains outstanding for an alleged co-conspirator.

Thomaston Savings Bank is a community bank based in Connecticut with $1.9 billion in total assets.
