Unknown man in North Carolina was arrested on suspicion of executing an elaborate multi-million dollar gold scheme.
CBS17 reports that police intercepted “controlled gold drops” outside of local Walmarts, leading to a chase, and ultimately the arrest of 29-year old Florida resident Michael Francois.
Reports say that authorities began investigating an extensive gold fraud when “Lucas”, a suspect, and associates pretended to be federal agents or financial officials and convinced the victim his accounts had been compromised.
Bad actors ask and get remote access to victims’ mobile phones and computers, then instruct them to send money to a certain firm to purchase gold, provide a photo of the transaction, and surrender the gold to a Walmart near.
The authorities say that the anonymous victim was defrauded of $2.8million. Police set up an operation to try and catch fraudsters. They eventually found Francois who had fled police in the car crash that resulted in his head injury.
He has been arrested for a number of crimes, such as fraud and fleeing the law enforcement.
