Tesla’s dependence on Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited has been brought to the forefront by the addition of CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited) to the list of Chinese entities with military links.
The designation does not impose any sanctions at this time, but it is a warning for US firms to be wary of collaborating with companies linked to the Chinese military.
Tesla’s dependence on CATL to supply its batteries raises concerns about its ability to balance geopolitical demands from the US with its strategic interests in China.
Tesla’s dependence on CATL
Tesla purchases lithium iron phosphate batteries (LFPs) from CATL primarily for the Shanghai plant, which is a major hub for exports into Europe and Canada.
CATL is also a key player in Tesla’s energy storage system, the Megapack. There are plans to continue collaborations, which include licensing CATL’s battery technology in Nevada for production facilities by 2025.
Tesla is vulnerable due to its reliance on CATL. This makes it susceptible to changes in US-China relationships. CATL being listed on the Pentagon list of Chinese Military Companies does not restrict Tesla’s business at this time, but it complicates its position.
Concerns about national security have been raised by lawmakers regarding CATL’s US energy storage projects.
These pressures could escalate and affect the viability or future partnership of Tesla.
Tesla and geopolitics intersect
This designation comes as CATL looks to expand in the US, where it will account for 35% of energy storage and 4% of its electric vehicle batteries in 2023. This expansion, however, is under threat.
US Defence Budget measures proposed recently ban federal contracts by companies listed on the list of military-connected firms. This would be in place until 2026. Under political pressure, companies like Duke Energy are already phasing-out CATL.
Tesla’s stakes are very high. It is crucial that Tesla navigates these geopolitical tensions, as they work to increase production of EVs and storage solutions and satisfy the increasing demand.
CATL has a strong presence in the battery industry and is closely tied to the Chinese government. This could lead Tesla’s supply chains to be unstable if they cut ties.
Tesla’s delicate balancing act
Tesla’s relationship with CATL will depend on the geopolitical situation and how the US government views Chinese investment.
Analysts speculate that Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, has close relationships with US policymakers including the incoming president Donald Trump. This could provide a temporary reprieve from possible restrictions.
CATL has, on the other hand, maintained its position. It denied any involvement in military operations and compared its importance to Huawei in telecommunications.
In spite of these claims, the company is facing a damaged reputation and increasing challenges as it pursues US market opportunities.
The post Tesla battery supply: How CATL could affect Tesla’s batteries if it adds Chinese military-linked entities to its list may change as new developments unfold.
