After being released from US custody, billionaire Changpeng Zhao made his first public statements over the weekend.
In a social media post on the platform X, Zhao reaffirmed his commitment to invest in blockchain, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. He stressed that his long-term view is centered around impact, rather than financial return.
“Focus on impact, not return,” Zhao says
Zhao expressed optimism in his post by writing: “There will always be more opportunities in the near future than in the past.”
He acknowledged that there might be many questions, but said he’d take some time to reflect on his next steps.
“Let’s chill out for a while.” He added, hinting to future plans: “Then figure out the steps.”
He expressed his gratitude for the support that he received while in custody and noted that it helped him get through some of his darkest times.
Zhao also shared his ongoing work with Giggle Academy, an online nonprofit education platform.
He said that this initiative would be a major focus for the next few years and he highlighted his intention to devote more resources to charitable works and education.
Binance continues to thrive even without Zhao
Zhao also commented on Binance’s current status, stating that it is performing well without his direct involvement.
“Oh, it seems that @binance is doing well without my back-seat driving, which is fantastic. “Every founder’s Dream!” he wrote in a letter expressing satisfaction over the company’s operations.
Binance, which is the largest digital asset exchange in the world, plays a crucial role in the trading and derivatives of cryptocurrencies.
The platform continues to be under scrutiny and regulatory oversight from US authorities, in particular.
Legal troubles and $4.3 Billion Penalty
Binance suffered a major setback in November after it was fined $4.3 billion as part of a plea deal to settle US charges about regulatory failures which allowed illicit actors to use the platform, including criminals, terrorists, and terrorist organizations.
Zhao personally agreed with a $50 million fine. He served four months of custody before being released on September 27, from a California correctional facility.
Zhao was required to step down as Binance CEO under the terms of the plea agreement, and hand over the leadership to Richard Teng.
The platform will be monitored for years by the US Department of Justice, as well as the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (a division of US Treasury).
Zhao also shared his plans to focus on charitable efforts in addition to his technology investments.
He said that he was still writing a book which is about two-thirds complete. He described the project as being more demanding than what he had initially anticipated but he was determined to finish it.
Zhao is among the wealthiest people in the world, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He was also the richest prisoner in the US.
“See you at the Conferences”
Zhao’s influence on the tech and blockchain industries remains significant, despite his departure from Binance.
Gm, the food tastes so good… What a luxury it is to be able have more than 1 piece of fruit a day! I know that some of you have many questions. I don’t have the answers. Let me relax for a while. Then, decide on the next steps. There are always new opportunities in…
He ended his post by teasing his future involvement in the industry with “Stay Tuned.” See you at the conference.”
Zhao’s next moves will be closely monitored by the crypto community and beyond as he charts a course with Giggle Academy, and continues to invest into emerging technologies.
