Global PC sales continue to recover with YoY gains for a fourth consecutive quarter.

Microsoft’s role in PC recoveryArtificial Intelligence is increasing PC demand

Total PC shipment grew 1.3% year-over-year to reach 66.4 millions units. The units consist of desktop PCs and notebooks as well as workstations.

Lenovo is the market leader, with 16.49 millions units sold globally. HP follows at 13.57 units.

The two most dominant PC players are still these two.

Apple’s declining PC sales was the most intriguing part of these new figures.

The company’s computers aren’t popular with users anymore, as it dropped by 17.5% in the last year.

It is unclear what people prefer, but it could be that they don’t want to upgrade.

Many people were surprised by ASUS’s rise from the fifth spot to fourth with an astounding 15.8% increase, which is the largest among the Top 5 Players.

Microsoft’s role in PC recovery

Microsoft played an important role in the revival of the PC industry.

Windows 10 is scheduled to end in October 2025.

The deadline for companies to upgrade to Windows 11 is less than one year. Otherwise, they will be charged the Extended Support Fees associated with Windows 10.

Windows is the operating system that drives the market.

It would explain also why Apple is struggling, but these players have an increase in performance.

ASUS, a relatively small player in the industry, still had the fastest growth rate amongst the top five players.

Investors and analysts would not be as impressed if this growth had been driven by Windows’ end-of-life, since the company started with a much smaller customer base.

Artificial Intelligence is increasing PC demand

AI is influencing the PC market like it does any other. People are upgrading their PCs as AI penetrates the market.

The AI processors are being developed by all semiconductor manufacturers.

Intel, Qualcomm and AMD released their latest generation AI processors that are driving sales of PCs this year.

These processors are expected to continue upgrading at an accelerated pace as AI technology continues to improve. This will encourage people to switch to new PCs faster.

According to research firm Canalys, the growth generated by these factors will likely continue over the next twelve months.

The research firm’s Channel Checks found that 54% of vendors expect growth in the current quarter.

As the end of Windows 10 and the arrival of improved AI technology will not diminish the demand, it is likely that the demand for the current quarter would be sufficient.
