US President Donald Trump has said that he will speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin about efforts to stop the conflict in Ukraine on Tuesday.
Trump told reporters on Air Force One, during the late night flight from Florida back to Washington that negotiations were ongoing.
I’m going to speak with President Putin Tuesday. Trump stated that a lot of work was done on the weekend.
It is our goal to bring an end to that war. We may be able to, or we may not, but we do have a good chance.”
Trump has called for a ceasefire of 30 days, which the Ukraine agreed to last week. The fighting continues, however, as both sides have engaged in intense aerial attacks over the past weekend.
In the meantime, Russian troops are making gains in Kursk region, which is located near western Russia. Ukrainian forces had been occupying this area for several months.
Trump said, in response to a question about possible concessions: “We’ll be talking land.” “We will talk about power plants.”
He said that the key issues of territorial adjustment and asset control had been discussed between Ukraine and Russia.
Trump’s attempts to end the war
Trump has been trying to negotiate a truce while his administration is changing the US’s policy towards Russia.
He had previously voiced frustration about Ukraine and described it as being more difficult to deal with than Russia.
The meeting between Trump, and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy, ended in tense conditions, as Zelenskiy left the White House before scheduled.
The acceptance by Ukraine of the ceasefire offer has put pressure on Russia and tested whether Trump’s diplomatic approach towards Putin will yield results.
The Russian President, who initiated the invasion of Ukraine in Ukraine three years earlier, has yet to publicly respond to the latest proposition.
Trump has now addressed the promises he made during his campaign to end the Russia-Ukraine War within 24 hours.
He clarified in an interview with the TV program Full Measure, last week that some of his remarks were sarcastic.
Trump stated, “I’d really like to settle it and I believe I will be successful.”
The call between Trump and Putin on Tuesday will be crucial in determining if progress is made towards ending the conflict.
The two leaders have spoken twice since Trump’s second term began in January.
Trump and Putin spoke previously in February. They agreed to begin high-level discussions aimed at ending war in Ukraine.
As new information becomes available, this post, President Trump said he would talk with Putin about the ar situation in Ukraine on Tuesday may change.
