Donald Trump sent a stern warning to Vladimir Putin in Russia, telling him that if he doesn’t reach an agreement to end the Ukraine conflict “now”, he will face increased tariffs, and more sanctions.
The ultimatum delivered by Trump via his Truth Social network, on Wednesday, marks a major shift in the tone of the US President, who had previously shown admiration for Putin’s leadership.
Tariffs and sanctions are the only option.
Trump said in his blog post that if we do not reach a “deal” soon, he would have to impose high taxes, tariffs and sanctions on any goods sold by Russia to United States and other countries.
The rhetoric has escalated dramatically, and Putin is now under direct pressure to negotiate.
The tone changes but there is still underlying appreciation
Trump, despite the warning, noted that “he did not want to harm Russia,” and that “he always had a good relationship with the President Putin,” whom he expressed admiration for in the past. This highlights the complexity and contradictions of Trump’s administration.
All of this being said, I am going to do President Putin and Russia’s Economy, which is in a bad state, an enormous favor. Stop this absurd war! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE.”
More aggressive than earlier statements
Trump’s Wednesday statement signals an escalation of his positions compared with a Tuesday press conference, where he stated that “it sounds likely” he would impose additional sanctions against Putin if he did not sit down to negotiate, which was a less direct approach than the one he adopted the next day.
Trump did not confirm, however, that he will continue the policy of his predecessor Joe Biden to send weapons to Ukraine. He said, “We are looking into that.” “We’re speaking to the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and we will be talking with President Putin very shortly,” Trump said, suggesting that US policy could change.
Trump promises to quickly end the Ukraine War
Trump promised to end the conflict in Ukraine even before he took office. This led to expectations that he could use aid to pressure Kyiv into making concessions to Moscow.
Trump’s unusually harsh criticism of Putin, made on Monday morning, highlighted the increasing pressure on Putin.
Zelensky told Trump that he supported a peace deal to end the conflict, which added another layer of complexity.
