US President Donald Trump has been weighing up a proposal that would distribute to the taxpayers a portion federal savings from cost cutting.
The plan, which has gained traction on social media, suggests using 20% of the savings identified by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to issue refunds to American households–potentially amounting to a $5,000 doge check per household.
Elon Musk’s response to a James Fishback, CEO of an investment firm who posted on X about the idea gave it momentum.
Fishback suggested that the government should not allow savings from the government to be lost in bureaucracy but instead return some to taxpayers.
The President Trump should work with @ElonMusk to announce the ‘DOGE dividend’ – a tax refund cheque sent directly to each taxpayer that is funded by a percentage of DOGE’s total savings.
He wrote: “It’s their money!” Musk responded, saying he would check with President Obama. Musk has long been an advocate of cutting federal spending.

Doge savings and fiscal policies
Under the Trump administration’s DOGE initiative is a program that aims to reduce fraud, inefficiencies and wasteful spending by government.
According to the agency, it has saved $55 billion by implementing various measures such as contract cancellations and regulatory rollbacks. It also reduced its workforce.
Recent reports by Bloomberg, The New York Times , and The New York Times indicate that the real savings could be much lower. Only $16.6 billion has been verified in DOGE’s official documents.
Musk set a target for $2 trillion of federal spending reductions, which he reiterated with Trump during an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity.
Fishback calculates that if achieved, allocating 20% from these savings will provide $5,000 in doge cheques to each of the US taxpayer households.
The remainder would go towards paying down the debt.
Musk is interested in the DOGE refund, but he also stresses the need to close the deficit.
Musk responded to comments from Scott Adams on X by writing that balancing a budget was the “priority.”
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the US federal deficit is expected to exceed $2 trillion per year in coming years.
The Trump administration will have a difficult time closing this gap, while also considering the tax refunds that are available under the Doge Dividend Check program.
What is Dodge Trump
Online, the term “doge Trump” is trending. It refers to Trump’s participation in DOGE and his administrations’ broader efforts for government efficiency.
As the debate over budget cuts and tax refunds intensifies, this phrase is becoming more popular.
Trump and Musk continue to discuss the best way to reduce government waste, while providing financial relief for taxpayers.
