US President Donald Trump stated Friday that he was “strongly considering”, imposing massive banking sanctions and tariffs against Russia, until Ukraine reaches a ceasefire agreement and a peace accord.
Trump posted on Truth Social that he was considering imposing large-scale sanctions and tariffs against Russia, based on the fact “that Russia is absolutely “pounding” Ukraine right now on the battlefield.”
The President also warned that it was too late to start negotiations and urged the two countries to do so immediately. “Thank you!! !”
Trump is soft on Russia
Trump’s approach in negotiations with Russia, Ukraine and other countries has been criticized. His critics accuse him of being too lenient with Putin.
He falsely claims that Ukraine started the conflict.
The critics have noticed a change in US foreign policies under Donald Trump. They claim that the Trump administration is taking a more accommodative approach to Russia, while also pressing Ukraine to end the conflict.
The new administration is a change from that of the Biden Administration, which supported Ukraine more and criticized Russia less.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia attacked Ukraine in large numbers just hours before Trump made his statement. It used 261 drones and missiles that targeted energy and gas pipelines.
Trump’s administration has also stopped military assistance and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, after a heated Oval Office discussion last week between Trump and JD Vance, the Vice President of the United States, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Meeting in the Oval Office with Zelenskyy is tense
Trump’s comments come only days after an tense Oval Office meeting between him and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
This encounter was a mixture of polite and heated exchanges, and highlighted the growing tension between both leaders regarding the US’ involvement in the war, and the future direction.
Zelenskyy hoped to maintain US support for Ukraine as it struggles against Russian forces. Trump, however, reiterated that he wanted a quick resolution and emphasized his belief in the unsustainable nature of a prolonged conflict.
He repeatedly questioned how much US assistance was being provided to Kyiv, and suggested a ceasefire would be necessary to avoid further escalated violence.
Trump, it is reported, expressed his skepticism regarding Zelenskyy’s position, saying that Ukraine should be more open for negotiations.
He warned, too, that continued conflict could lead to a wider conflict. He told him that he would be gambling on World War III if he continued to resist a ceasefire.
The exchange took place during a signing ceremony between the two leaders, which would have allowed US access to future revenues from Ukraine’s resources.
According to recent reports, the agreement may be signed.
