The meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which took place on Friday, quickly became tense as both leaders were at odds over prospects for a peace agreement with Russia that was mediated by the US.
Zelenskyy questioned the possibility of an agreement lasting, prompting a furious response from Trump, and vice president JD Vance who accused Zelenskyy of being unappreciative and obstructing the negotiations.
Trump said to Zelenskyy that it would be difficult to conduct business without US assistance.
You don’t even have cards. You have cards with us but you wouldn’t have them without us.
Then he warned, “You are gambling with World War III and your actions show disrespect to this country.”
You don’t hold the cards yet. When you join us, your cards will start to appear.

Zelenskyy and Trump vs Vance in the Oval Office
Both leaders met to discuss a deal that would allow the US to access future revenues from Ukraine’s mineral resources.
Trump presented the agreement as an important commitment towards Kyiv and argued that it will pave the path for peace.
It did not offer Zelenskyy the security guarantees he had requested, instead focusing on economic cooperation.
Zelenskyy responded by insisting on the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly broken past ceasefires and that Ukraine cannot settle for just a simple truce.
He warned that Putin would not stop, but go even further. The Russian leader is determined to destroy Ukraine.
Vance’s criticism of Zelenskyy’s tone heightened the conversation.
The vice president asked: “Do you believe that it is respectful to come into the Oval Office of United States of America to attack the government that’s working to stop the destruction of your nation?”
Trump accused Zelenskyy then of harbouring a “tremendous hate” towards Putin and suggested that Zelenskyy’s emotions prevented a solution.
Zelenskyy said that Trump was protected by the ocean and did not understand what Ukraine’s immediate dangers were.
Trump replied, “You are not in a position to tell us how we will feel. We will feel good and strong. “You’re not in the best position at this moment.”
Vance pressed Zelenskyy for an acknowledgement of US support. He asked, “Have You Said Thank You Once?”
The American journalist added, “It’s better to litigate these disagreements than fight them out in American media when they’re wrong.”
Trump has presented the deal on natural resources as a means to compensate American taxpayers and strengthen economic relations with Ukraine. Trump has continued to call for a truce, saying that the economic incentive would deter Russian aggression.
Once we reach an agreement, 95% will be done. Trump expressed confidence that he could negotiate with Putin and said: “It’s never going to be back to fights.”
