Speaking at the AI Action Summit on Tuesday in Paris, US Vice President JDVance pledged to protect the US’ artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductor technology, and other critical technologies against theft and misuse. He also stressed a strong stance against “weaponization”.
He outlined the Trump Administration’s AI approach, focusing on deregulation, innovation, protection of free speech, and protecting US workers.
Vance compared the AI advances to the beginning of a second industrial revolution. This underscored the commitment by the Obama administration to position the United States at the forefront of the AI-driven economic system.
Vance stated that “authoritarian regimes use AI for their surveillance and military intelligence capabilities to enhance national security, to capture foreign data and to create propaganda.”
He promised that his administration will “block any such attempts, period.”
Vance described a multifaceted approach for achieving that, which includes working with allies in order to strengthen protective measures as well as closing any avenues through which adversaries could access AI-sensitive capabilities.
Vance: USA AI Leadership
The vice president stressed the importance of global collaboration at the Paris AI Summit.
Vance said, “The United States of America leads the world in AI and we plan to maintain that position.” He called on partners around the globe to build trust by establishing regulatory frameworks which encourage rather than suppress innovation.
He called on European allies in particular to “approach AI’s potencial with optimism.”
Vice President criticized the reports that foreign governments were considering restrictive measures against US technology companies. He warned, “America will not and cannot accept this, and we believe it is a terrible error.”
Vance also pointed out the potential transformative power of AI. He compared it to a “new industrial revolution” but warned against excessive regulation and monopolistic controls that might suppress free thinking and innovation.
The Trump Administration will make sure that AI developed in America is free of ideological bias, and it won’t restrict the right to freedom of speech for our citizens.
DeepSeek fears at Paris
Discussions at the summit have mostly focused on China’s AI advances, especially its DeepSeek AI model. It claims to be comparable in performance with OpenAI’s reasoning model o1 but for a fraction of OpenAI’s cost.
Vance did not mention DeepSeek, but he called out “cheap technology in the market” that is subsidized and backed by dictatorships. This was a hint at China’s growing influence.
Vance warned against countries collaborating with companies tied to these regimes. He said that collaborating with these parties would bind your country to an authoritarian ruler who wants to seize, infiltrate and dig into your information infrastructure.
The US is seeking to maintain its dominant position in AI, chip design and other emerging technologies while encouraging global allies adopting similar safeguards.
The post US will remain the AI leader: JD Vance, VP at Paris Summit could be updated as new information becomes available.
