IRS will send $2.4 billion to US taxpayers who qualify by the end of January.
The payments are issued by direct deposit, or via paper checks. They’re for individuals who didn’t claim the Recovery Rebate Credit in their 2021 returns.
Why is this stimulus check being issued?
Internal Revenue Service announced the initiative, after it identified taxpayers that were eligible for Recovery Rebate Credits but had not claimed them.
The Recovery Rebate Credit (also known as the Stimulus Payment Credit) is designed to reimburse individuals who have not received one or more Economic Impact payments.
Danny Werfel, IRS commissioner, stated that “our internal review revealed that almost one million eligible tax payers missed this complex credit.”
To simplify this process, and to ensure that these funds are received by those who qualify for them, we have made these payments automatically. The money will be paid automatically to the taxpayers without them having to amend their tax return.
What is the process for receiving the stimulus payments?
There is no need for taxpayers to take any additional steps in order to get these payments.
IRS confirms that checks started to be sent out by December, and they are expected to arrive at the end of the month.
Payments are issued as either direct deposit or paper checks depending on how the refund was previously processed.
IRS stimulus checks: determining eligibility
The IRS will notify those eligible to receive the payment.
Taxpayers can also review their tax returns for 2021 to see if the Recovery Rebate Credit was left blank, or if it is listed as $0.00.

Individuals will receive a stimulus payment ranging from $1400 to $2400.
According to IRS, the IRS expects that total payments disbursed will be $2.4 billion in all 50 states.
What happens if you don’t have a tax return for 2021?
You may be eligible for the stimulus payment even if you did not file your 2021 tax returns.
To be eligible, however, you will need to file your return for 2021 and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit before April 15, 2025.
The IRS stressed that even those who have a minimal income or none at all must still file their tax returns to be eligible for this credit.
You will receive the funds you are entitled to automatically if you qualify for this round.
There’s still plenty of time for those who failed to file a return in 2021. You can claim your credit and receive payment.
Check your tax return for 2021 to verify your eligibility.
