OpenAI, a search engine rival to Google and Microsoft Bing has launched a search function within the popular ChatGPT bot.
The San Francisco AI startup’s move announced Thursday will directly compete with Google, which has long dominated online searches.
This new “ChatGPT Search” feature allows users to search the web in real time for up-to date information, such as sports scores, weather and news.
The beta testing of this functionality began in July. It is powered by partnerships between various news providers and data suppliers.

ChatGPT allows users to follow up on their search with a series of questions. This is similar to traditional search engines.
The user can manually start a search on the web by clicking an icon.
Varun Shetty is OpenAI’s Head of Media Partnerships. He stated that search “improves relevance and decreases illusions” and provides more reliable and accurate answers to users’ queries.
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman said it was his favorite feature of ChatGPT. Altman said on Reddit that he found it to be an easier/faster way to find the information he was looking for.
OpenAI plans to further enhance its search functionality. Future updates are expected to include features related to travel and shopping, as well as voice-activated capabilities.
Google responds with gusto
Alphabet Inc. is under increased pressure by investors since the launch of ChatGPT on November 20, 2022. They are concerned that OpenAI could capture a large portion of the market.
Alphabet’s shares fell by about 1% after the announcement of ChatGPT.
Google, however, has increased its efforts in integrating AI with its search features to meet OpenAI’s challenges.
Google AI Overviews was launched in May of this year. This feature displays AI generated answers prominently at the top to keep users engaged.
Google’s Gemini Live chatbot, powered by AI, was launched in June. It allows users to have voice conversations with their smartphone.
Google invests heavily to advance its technology. The generative AI market is expected to reach $1.3 trillion in 2032.
Recent earnings dispel concerns that AI investments are not paying off
Google’s AI commitment is clear. Its cloud computing division reported a performance better than expected in Q3, easing investor concerns that it might lose its competitive advantage.
Its artificial intelligence services, including subscription services to enterprise customers, are credited with this impressive growth.
Google’s Search Business, the biggest contributor to revenue growth for the company, also generated revenue of $49.4 Billion, up 12.3% on a year earlier.
OpenAI’s newer search offerings are not replacing Google, but users continue to rely heavily on it.
In an earnings call held earlier this week by Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google Alphabet and Google, he revealed that AI Overviews had begun rolling out in more than one hundred countries and regions and would now be reaching more than 1 Billion users monthly.
The user’s satisfaction and overall usage of search has increased, he said.
Pichai said that Google had reduced the costs of AI-based answers to search queries from over 90% in 18 months.
The company has achieved this through advances in engineering and hardware, which have enabled it to provide efficient and effective AI-based solutions.
