Just ten days prior to his second inauguration, Donald Trump, the president-elect, was given an unconditional discharge in his criminal New York hush money trial.
Trump is the first criminally convicted president to be elected after the Manhattan judge Juan Merchan’s ruling. He will not face jail, probation or fines.
This case has attracted national and international interest and highlights the political and legal complexities that surround Trump’s return.
The sentence was delivered by Judge Merchan during an hearing in which Trump was able to appear remotely.
This has been an awful experience
Trump said that “this has been an extremely terrible experience”, reiterating his claims that this case was politically motivated to damage Trump’s reputation ahead of the elections.
He said that the investigation was part of an “overall political witch-hunt.”
This case stemmed out of allegations that Trump had falsified his business records to conceal a payment made by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former attorney, to Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress, for $130,000.
Daniels was paid to remain silent on the alleged affair between Trump and Daniels, which Trump has denounced.
In May, a jury found Trump guilty on 34 counts of felony charges related to the payments.
The Judge Merchan stated that a discharge without conditions was the only legal sentence he had to impose, as he did not want to interfere with the president.
Merchan stated that “the protection of the Office of the President is the factor which overrides everything else.”
Trump said that he would have not received the same protections as an average citizen.
The Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass backed the recommendation of unconditional discharge, noting the importance to respect the president.
Steinglass, however, criticized Trump’s attacks against the justice system throughout the trial and accused him of damaging the public trust in judiciary.
Trump was stoic throughout the entire hearing. He frowned and showed signs of frustration.
Todd Blanche expressed his disapproval of the arguments made by the prosecution, and called it “a sad day for the nation.”

He claimed that the ruling allowing him to avoid punishment vindicated his position.
This sentencing came after a long and contentious court battle that culminated in an US Supreme Court ruling just hours before.
The court, in a 5-4 decision, denied Trump’s application to stop the proceeding. Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined Chief Justice John Roberts, three liberal justices, and Justice Amy Coney Barrett as the majority.
This decision paved the way for a historic sentencing.
The high-profile legal case that has been brought to light by this recent incident, once again places Trump at the forefront of debates on politics and law as he is preparing for his second term in office.
The sentence does not impose any penalties. However, it has profound implications on the president and the public’s trust in the legal system.
The nation is watching closely as Trump negotiates through this storm of legal issues, waiting to see the effect these events will have on his legacy and leadership.
