Vitalik emphasizes Ethereum alignment to avoid fragmentation in the decentralized eco-system.

Aligning technology and economics, such as using ETH, is key to fostering collaboration.

Open interoperability and collaborative ERC standards are essential for ecosystem cohesion.
Vitalik Buterin (co-founder of Ethereum) discussed a crucial social challenge within the Ethereum eco-system: balancing cooperation and decentralization among its many projects. He stressed the importance a unified strategy to prevent the ecosystem from separating into multiple incompatible entities.
Buterin introduced the idea of Ethereum Alignment to solve this issue. This alignment includes open source development, minimization of centralization, and support for public goods.
Technical alignment is adhering to ecosystem standards, whereas economic alignment is using ETH natively whenever possible. In the past, a lack of clarity in the definition of alignment was risky. It could lead to social layer capture where alignment is equated with having the right connections, rather than shared goals.
Buterin Proposes “Legible Alignment”
Buterin proposed that to address these challenges, Ethereum alignment be broken down into specific properties which can be measured using clear metrics. He sees platforms like L2beat as evaluating how individual projects meet these criteria.
This approach is designed to shift the competition away from forming alliances and towards aligning on transparent, understandable standards. The Ethereum Foundation can support such initiatives through funding platforms like L2beat, while remaining decoupled from direct oversight. This ensures the process remains open.
Community Reactions & Standards
Ross, a key figure in the Ethereum community, responded by asking Vitalik about the possibility that ERC (Ethereum Request For Comments) standards could become isolated fiefdoms.
He said that the increasing number of ERCs with their own standards, such as ERC-20 and ERC-1271 can lead to fragmentation. This makes the alignment process more challenging. Ross stressed the importance of interoperability and open standards, suggesting that new ERCs be developed collaboratively in order to keep the ecosystem cohesive.

Buterin agreed with Ross and suggested that a rule-of-thumb for developing new ERCs is to involve multiple teams right from the start. He cited the successful collaboration of teams like @hal2001 and Uniswap on ERC-7683 as an example for effective standardization.
Ross said that he prefers the economic alignment. He believes it is a fundamental aspect that could make alignment of other types easier. He wants economic factors driving cooperation and standard adoption to make it easier to achieve across different projects.
