Google has integrated zero-knowledge proof technology (ZKP), a major change in the way user data is protected when confirming identity. This new feature in Google Wallet allows users to confirm their identity and age without having to share sensitive personal information.
The active feature will address the rising concerns about data leakage in digital identification processes.

The ZKP enhanced digital ID system is launched in the United Kingdom first. UK users can now link their digital IDs to their passports in order to verify identity across participating platforms.
Rail Delivery Group was the first partner to accept these credentials as proof of age when purchasing railcards. Google is also in talks to expand the use these IDs for other regulated areas including alcohol purchases.

The technology allows age verification without revealing any personal information. This is done through custom-built ZK system developed using technology from Ligero. A startup focused on privacy platform. Ligero has been backed by blockchain investors including Galaxy Ventures and Franklin Templeton.
Expansion across U.S. States
In the United States, more states are integrating digital IDs with Google Wallet. Arkansas, Montana Puerto Rico and West Virginia residents will be able to store official documents in the app. Arizona, Georgia Maryland and New Mexico will allow their use for Department of Motor Vehicles operations.
Google has confirmed that it will support digital passports for domestic flights as the deadline for REAL ID usage nears. These credentials will only be accepted in select airports that are authorized, allowing travelers the ability to use their mobile device for identity checks.

Google has stated that the implementation of its ZK system for other online services and wallets will be open-sourced. It is still unclear how Google’s ZK will interact with cryptocurrency applications. Google has also partnered up with platforms such as Bumble to verify age using the ZK system.
