After nearly 12 years, a deep-pocketed Bitcoin investor who owned a dormant wallet has just transferred 1,000 BTC.
Whale Alert, a crypto-tracker, notes that on Sunday the old wallet moved 1.263 BTC and 998.73 BTC from one address to another.
According to BitInfoCharts, the whale acquired the 1,000 Bitcoins in September 2012. At that time, the value of the stack was only $12,223.
BTC is currently trading for $64,682. This means that the trove of BTC now has a value of more than $64.7million, an astounding increase of almost 530,000%.
Whale Alert discovered that the long-dormant Bitcoin wallet had received trace amounts a few times in the past 12 years. However, these transactions seem to have been the result of dusting.
Hackers and scammers use dusting attacks to send minuscule amounts (of cryptocurrency) into a number of wallets to try to compromise the privacy of wallet owners.
Scammers then try to track the transactions of the wallets to determine who or what company is behind it. Threat actors will use a variety of strategies, including cyber-extortion or phishing scams to steal from the victim once the owner’s identity is revealed.
The transaction on Sunday is not the only one from these ancient whales. After more than ten years, an old crypto wallet with 25 BTC valued at $1.43m was reactivated last Friday.
Whale Alert noticed that on the 9th of July, a wallet with 24 BTC valued at $1.44million was being activated again after 11 years.
