TRM Labs’ latest research shows that Russian speakers are the most common cybercriminals.
A TRM Report states that cybercrimes involving cryptography include illicit crypto exchanges, darknet drug trafficking, and ransomware.
Darknet Markets: Russian-speaking markets accounted for 95% of illicit drug sales in dark web crypto currency by 2023.
TRM research shows that most illegal funds are funneled via Garantex, a Russian crypto-exchange.
Many of the actors in this report are believed to reside inside Russia. Some of these actors have even had links with the Kremlin. Reports also suggest that crypto funds may be used to finance Russia’s war in Ukraine and military interests.
The US Government sanctioned crypto wallets that reportedly belonged to two Russians who were linked with the LockBit ransomware group in February this year.
A press release from the time stated that the U.S. wallets of Ivan Gennadievich Kondratiev and Artur Sungatov had been blocked after LockBit’s attack on the U.S. broker dealer of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), affecting the settlement of millions of dollars of assets.
