Bill Morgan criticized Selkis for criticizing XRP but praised Larsen’s donation.
Chris Larsen, cofounder of Ripple labs, has donated $10 Million in XRP through Future Forward super PAC to support Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 election campaign. The crypto community has had mixed reactions to this move.
Larsen announced the latest donation he made to Harris via a post he published on X. He emphasized that Democrats must adopt a new approach to tech innovation including crypto. He expressed his confidence that Harris will ensure American technology is a global leader. Larsen has previously supported Harris, donating $1 million in XRP in August.
Mixed Reactions From Crypto Leaders
Larsen’s gift sparked a significant reaction in the crypto community. This was especially true for Ryan Selkis founder of Messari, an analytics firm. Selkis called Larsen by many names and criticized him harshly. He claimed that Larsen had used XRP as “a useless currency”, which he allegedly exploited retail investors, while misleading the public regarding its relevance in banking applications.
He concluded his outburst with a call for the “death” of XRP. Bill Morgan, an XRP supporter, said that Larson’s gift was “misguided,” but called Selkis’s comments “crazy.” Morgan suggested that Selkis’s call for the “death” of XRP in response to the Ripple founder’s donation is unwarranted.
Steven Boccone, a X user, responded to Selkis by pointing out that, while it is reasonable to be upset at Larsen’s choices in politics, it is absurd to claim that the decision signals the death of XRP. Morgan agreed with Boccone and highlighted the growing trend of people in the U.S. attacking others based on their political preferences.
Crypto’s growing role in U.S. Elections
Larsen’s large donations are part of a larger shift in the crypto sector’s involvement in U.S. election, where super-PACs such as Future Forward have allowed unlimited contributions to influence campaign politics. Larsen is a major donor to Harris, despite many crypto enthusiasts leaning towards Republican candidates.
Ben Horowitz, the co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, will support Harris despite the fact that pro-Trump crypto figures such as Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss or Kraken’s Jesse Powell are supporting Donald Trump.
