A large bank in the US has agreed to pay millions to settle claims that they bombarded people with illegal automated calls.
The Charlotte Observer reports that a federal judge has approved a preliminary settlement of $4.1 million between Truist Bank, and the cellphone users who claim they received unwanted calls.
Kevin Truong of Texas was the plaintiff in the lawsuit filed against Truist.
Truong claims he has received 35 robocalls between September 14, 2021 and December 31, 2021 from Truist Bank.
Truong, according to the complaint was not a client of Charlotte’s North Carolina-based Bank, nor did he consent to receive the calls.
“These callers injured Plaintiff because they invaded his privacy, interfered with his cell phone, and wasted his time.”
In the suit, it is alleged that the robocalls were made by call centers to collect money from customers or locate them.
The Act, among other things prohibits making automated calls to “cellular telephone services” or initiating any telephone call using an “APV (artificial voice or prerecorded message) to deliver a Message without the consent from the called party.
Truist Bank has settled the case despite denying liability. This is to save the bank the costs and the uncertainty of a long trial. According to the report, each class member could receive up to $440.
According to the Federal Reserve, Truist Bank’s total assets were a bit over $523 billion as of December 31, 2024.
