Ethena Labs (a leader in decentralized finance, or DeFi), known for its operations with synthetic dollars, suffered a serious security breach on 18 September.
Hackers have compromised Ethena’s front-end website. The company has responded immediately.
Ethena Labs, despite the hacking attempt, assured its users that their funds and the blockchain core infrastructure were safe and secure.
Ethena Labs temporarily shut down the site after the attack, while it addressed the problem.
We have recently discovered that the Ethena domain registration account has been compromised. Funds and protocol are unaffected. Do not use any website or app that claims to be Ethena’s front-end.
Ethena Labs, in light of this breach, has advised users to stay away from any website or application that claims to be associated with Ethena.
Users were also advised to remove their wallets from the website and to refrain from signing transactions.
The DeFi industry faces increased cybersecurity threats
The incident highlights a disturbing trend within the DeFi industry, in which hackers increasingly target web2 components that are used in web3 projects.
Recently, attacks not only exploited web2 vulnerabilities but also targeted endpoints on the chain.
Ethena Labs has joined a list of DeFi protocol that suffered security breaches. This includes Celer Network, Compound Finance and others who were also attacked earlier this year.
Blockaid, a security firm, has warned users connected to Ethena during the exploit to take steps to safeguard their assets.
MetaMask is a popular DeFi wallet that has flagged Ethena’s compromised site as “deceptive.” It warns users to be wary of fake MetaMask websites that are trying to take advantage of the situation in order to steal sensitive data such as passwords and seed phrases.
Crypto hacking to surge in 2024
The attack on Ethena Labs is part of a broader surge in cryptocurrency-related hacks, which have resulted in over $1.4 billion in losses so far in 2024.
A few high-profile attacks are responsible for the sharp rise in crypto theft. The top five hackers accounted for 70% of all the stolen cryptocurrency in the first six months of 2024.
More than 300 million dollars worth of Bitcoin was stolen by DMM Bitcoin, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange.
TRM Labs has identified the private key compromises and seed phrases as being the main attack vectors for 2024.
The Penpie Protocol was exploited for $27,000,000 on September 3, 2024. Another notable incident is the $6,000,000 hack of Delta Prime, a decentralized financial platform.
DeFi continues to grow and evolve. Maintaining robust security is a priority both for users and protocols.
Cyberattacks are becoming more frequent and larger, which highlights the importance of vigilance in cryptocurrency and the implementation of protective measures.
