Senator Elizabeth Warren claims that US competitors are using covertly digital asset mining for intelligence purposes.
Warren said she was concerned about other countries spying on US military personnel through cryptomines. She spoke at an Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.
Foreign adversaries use cryptomines in order to spy on US military activities. This is a clear national security threat. It’s not the only threat. Cryptomines owned by foreigners also pose a threat to the grid.
Paul Rosen, Assistant Secretary for Investment Security at the Treasury, made the comments during the hearing. He said that there was a generalized concern that “sophisticated technology” installed near sensitive sites “could be used to espionage.”
Senator Warren believes that in order to protect US interests, Congress should pass legislation that will strengthen national security by preventing foreigners from using mining and crypto facilities clandestinely.
Cryptomines can be used to spy or bring down power grids, as well as to move money into and out of a country secretly.
The Treasury Department asked Congress for additional tools last year to stop China, Iran and Russia from avoiding sanctions or laundering dirty money using cryptocurrency.
“It is now time to pass the laws Treasury requires.”
Warren has been a crypto critic for a very long time. Warren claimed in June last year that drug dealers, oligarchs, and “rogue countries” were all using crypto to finance their criminal regimes.
The Massachusetts Senator said that the crypto industry poses a serious threat to financial systems in 2021.
