Developer of interconnected Blockchain network Cosmos (ATOM), warns that Liquid Staking module (LSM) in the Cosmos Hub presents serious security threats.
Jae Kwon, co-founder of Cosmos, said in a press release that Jun Kai and Sarawut Sanit were the coders responsible for the majority of the code when Zaki Manian, a developer, began developing the LSM module in August 2021. They later became linked with North Korea.
Kwon claims that the same North Korean developers fixed vulnerabilities found by Oak Security in July 2022.
Kwon claims that Manian was informed by the FBI in March 2023 about North Korea’s involvement in the Cosmos Hub project. However, Manian did not disclose this information to Cosmos Community. Instead, Manian declared in April 2023 the LSM had been deployed, and proposed the integration of the LSM with the Cosmos Hub.
The LSM had been integrated with the Cosmos Hub in September after 19 months of code changes that were not audited.
Kwon warns that security problems with LSM may have serious implications for the Cosmos community.
