As a large US county gets ready to launch its second experiment in guaranteed income, dozens of families will get payments without any strings attached for the entire year.
The Herald Sun reports that Durham County in North Carolina will be accepting applications for DCoThrives this month, an income-guaranteed program aimed at low-income households.
Each month, one hundred twenty five families will receive $750 to spend as they please. DCo Thrives is administered by Durham Children’s Initiative, a nonprofit organization.
A control group consisting of 125 people will be included in the program to determine if the extra money can help improve the wellbeing of the children and families. Researchers will analyze the survey results. Both groups are required to fill out surveys. The surveys may take place online but participants could be asked to interview the researchers.
Both groups will fill out surveys, and they will receive $100 as compensation for completing the survey. The data from DCo Thrives will be used in order to understand the effectiveness and efficiency of guaranteed income programmes for Durham, as well as beyond .”
Adults who have at least one child under the age of 18 can apply for this program. Participants must have a household income below 30% of Durham’s median income. The participants will be chosen at random.
Spectrum News 1 reported that Durham County’s first guaranteed income experiment, StepUp Durham was aimed at ex-convicts. StepUp Durham began in March 2022, and provided $600 per month for a year to 109 formerly incarcerated individuals.
