After the US executive and legislative branches of a state gave their approval, a multi-million dollar pilot program for guaranteed income is about to launch.
This new program is intended to assist Californians living below the poverty line.
This program will be known tentatively as “Guaranteed income older adults” and it is aimed at individuals 60 or older who reside in the state. They must also either qualify for or receive a government benefit that’s based on their means.
California Department of Social Services says that the funding total for the pilot project, as outlined in the budget of California for fiscal years 2024-2025, is $4.75million.
The CDSS has announced that it conducted community listening sessions in the past year, as part of its plans to launch the pilot program for guaranteed income.
Some recommendations include setting up a monthly minimum of $500 for at least a half-year.
According to the CDSS, 200 participants are required for the program. The CDSS also recommended that participants be allowed to choose whether to receive recurring payments or lump-sums, or to combine both.
The CDSS has begun the search for a nonprofit public or private organization that will run the program over a period of three and half years, before the pilot is launched.
These applications are due by the 9th of April, and will be chosen on 25th June.
